La Boca

a famously painted neighborhood in Buenos Aires

In August of 2001, I visited La Boca for the first time as part of a tour with our regular tour guide. La Boca is the port barrio (neighborhood) of the city, the place where the immigrants landed, notorious for its brothels, violence, tenement housing, and industrial background. However, it is also known for its brightly painted buildings, which draw tourists by the busloads to this improving neighborhood. In August of 2002, the day before I headed back to the United States, I returned to La Boca to take photographs of the touristy part of this very singular neighborhood.
