<--RETURN TO PHOTO INDEXMendoza & the Andesthe city of Mendoza in the province of Mendoza
In mid-February 2002, I headed out by myself to the city of Mendoza to check out the beautiful sights of the region. Mendoza is in the middle of the Cuyo region, which is known for its wine and its mountains. Near Mendoza is Cerro Aconcagua, the highest peak in the western hemisphere, climbed by people from all around the world. In the hostel I met many successful mountain climbers, who are the coolest people ever. :) On my trip along the Paso Uspallata (Uspallata Pass) in the Andes, the weather steadily cleared the higher we got, so we were able to get to the old border between Argentina and Chile, marked by a statue of the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer). We got to admire the views during our journey in the national park area & saw the Puente del Inca (Inca Bridge), a naturally-formed bridge near warm thermal baths. This region is really spectacular, and the mountains appear to be pintado a mano (hand-painted) by some powerful hand. (10 photos) |
